World Cancer Day

4th February is marked as World Cancer Day when the World unites together to raise awareness about this malicious disease. It lays emphasis on the necessity to fight and eliminate this disease from the world with proper prevention, detection, and treatment. Union for International Cancer Control is the organization to initiate World Cancer Day in order to reduce the stigma behind this disease and make people aware of the early diagnosis of this ghastly disease.

World Cancer Day is an international day marked to raise awareness of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. The primary goal of World Cancer Day is to reduce illness and death caused by cancer and is an opportunity to rally the international community to end the injustice of preventable suffering from cancer.

Cancer is a widely known disease that has affected millions of people around the world. Now many of you may ask what is cancer. Cancer is the abnormal growth of cells that becomes malignant and spreads to various parts of the body. Breast Cancer, Lung Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer are some of the most common types of Cancer.

World Cancer Day: Theme

The theme for World Cancer Day 2023 “Close the care gap” was adopted as the theme for a three-year World Cancer Day campaign (2022-2024) to address the inequities in cancer treatment and mobilize communities to fight for equitable access.

The theme for World Cancer Day 2021 is ‘I Am and I Will.’ It is a multi-year campaign that began in 2019 and this year will mark the last year. It represents an empowering call to action urging personal commitment, and also represents the power of action taken now to have a positive impact on the future. It focuses on ‘together, all our actions matter.’

The theme for World Cancer Day 2020 is ‘I Am and I Will’.  This theme will be used for the next three years. It acknowledges the fact that all individuals have the strength to fight against cancer and are ready to take the steps required. We have the will to fight against cancer, only if we prepare ourselves for it.

World Cancer Day: History

World Cancer Day was first celebrated on February 4, 2000, when the first World Summit against Cancer was held in Paris. On this day, the prominent leaders of the world signed the Charter of Paris Against Cancer. It was a document listing 10 articles outlining the need for a global commitment and saving the lives of people affected by cancer globally.

World Cancer Day: Significance

In the present times, it has become really important to aware people of the early diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care of this deadly disease. UICC with the support of the World Health Organization is dedicated to the cause of gaining the attention of people and increasing global awareness. On this day, various events, campaigns, etc are conducted. Educational activities, Cancer centers, Camps, etc are also set up to spread the word to the majority of people around the world.
