Unemployment in India 2023
Unemployment has been a significant problem of India historically. But it has become more serious especially after the COVID-19 pandemic as it led to either shutdown or a slowdown of economic activities. Gradually, with the containment of COVID-19, the economy is returning to its path and the unemployment rate is getting back to its previous state. However, even before COVID-19, the unemployment rate was high in the country. This becomes more worrying as India is already among the fastest-growing major economy.

The unemployment rate in India for people aged 15 years and above in urban areas declined to 7.6 percent during April-June 2022 from 12.6 percent a year ago, the National Statistical Office (NSO). In April-June 2021, joblessness was high in the country mainly due to the impact of Covid-related restrictions. The unemployment Rate in India decreased to 6.40 percent in September from 8.30 percent in August of 2022 as per the report of the Centre for Monitoring the Indian Economy.
The unemployment rate is the percentage of working-age people (15 years and above) who are available for work but are not able to get a job.
