Position Summary:
Harman’s Car Audio SBU is the global leader in the design and manufacture of OEM Branded Audio systems. The group maintains headquarters in Farmington Hills, Michigan with regional Product Development Centers there and in Germany, Korea, China, and Japan. The Sr. Director of Software Technologies will lead the Global Audio Technology and HALOsonic Teams to deliver best-in-class audio features and active noise management technologies to Automotive Customers – be it in Head Units, Amplifiers or SoCs. This position reports on a solid line basis to the VP Car Audio Global Engineering and on a dotted line basis to the Car Audio Global Product Management Lead. The person will work closely with, and often provide technical leadership to the Global Customer Business Unit (CBU) teams, the Lifestyle Technology TechworX team, Regional Product Development Engineering Teams, and Samsung technology partners. He/she will collaborate with Car Audio Global Product Management (GPM) Leadership and be responsible for all aspects of software based technology development and deployment.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Lead approximately 100+ global engineering and program management team members (indirect reports).
Job Responsibilities:

  • Drive Technology Deployment – Ensure development of best-in-class algorithms and audio technology solution libraries for automotive OEM customers and suppliers. Be the change catalyst driving continuous improvements in overall quality, cost, and efficiency.
  • Reduce Turnaround Time – Define processes, associated gating to enable quick turnaround of ideas from POC to Ready for Deployment – inducing traceability, transparency and accountability as the idea evolves from POC to a saleable finished product.
  • Establish Standards – Drive development and maintenance of design guidelines. Identify and implement prevent recurrence for defect problem solving activities.
  • Live the Product Lifecycle – Provide technical support for global product management team enabling the business development strategies for HALOsonic, AudioworX & Audio Technologies. Understand all aspects of product lifecycle from cradle to grave and ensure technology evolution strategies are factored-in.
  • Partnerships and Collaborations – Develop strategies to connect and collaborate with other automotive suppliers to leverage synergies and ensure that Harman is OEM customers’ first choice for Car Audio related solutions.
  • Leading a Team – Build and develop a strong team of Technical Product Leaders, responsive to the needs of the business and customers. Ability to attract, retain and motivate best in class talent. Promotes and develops top talent, move or change incorrect talent when needed.
  • Strategic Partner & Team Player – Participate in the development of the Global Lifestyle Car Audio Technology Road mapping plans and programs as a strategic partner, works as a global team player in all Product and Technology Development teams: TechworX, EPIC and activities outside specific responsibility, establishing credibility throughout the organization as an effective developer of solutions to business challenges.

Basic Qualifications:

  1. Master’s Degree in Engineering; PhD preferred and at least 15 years of related progressive audio engineering leadership experience.
  2. Significant knowledge and experience in creating intellectual property and a broad engineering background. Experience with DSP signal processing is required.
  3. Ability to collaborate with innovation teams to harvest and apply new technologies to the market.
  4. Product Development – experience driving and leading program and software technology execution – technical capability to guide strategically and manage resources.
  5. Communication- Ability to effectively communicate, motivate, coach, and develop technical excellence
  6. Customer Skills – Experience and skill building relationships, selling to customer executives
  7. Understanding of world-class best practice in software design development and audio engineering. Current understanding of emerging technologies in the area of Audio engineering.
  8. Working knowledge of the OEM customers’ expectations and requirements.
  9. Proven experience leading large cross-functional teams.
  10. Knowledge of software and hardware principals and practices, ability to develop and present technical data, resolve internal and external conflicts, negotiate and resolve customer issues, communicate and motivate employees, conduct employee reviews and hire talented employees.
  11. Language- English: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Willingness to travel 30% of the time
  • Willingness to work in an office.
