Martyrs Day
Martyrs’ Day is celebrated on 30th January every year to give homage to the death of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on this day in 1948. To pay tribute, Prime Minister, Defence Minister, and three Service Chiefs gather at the Raj Ghat memorial and lay the wreaths that are decorated with flowers to the father of our nation. The inter-services forces reverse arms as a mark of respect on this day. Martyrs’ Day is also known as Shaheed Diwas.
History of Martyr’s Day
Martyr’s Day or Shaheed Diwas is observed on 30th January or 23 March in India to pay homage to the Father of our nation and Bhagat Singh respectively who have sacrificed their lives for their Motherland. Mahatma Gandhi, the father of Nation was assassinated at Gandhi Smriti in the Birla House on 30 January 1948.
Why is Martyr’s Day celebrated on 30th January?
Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of our Nation was assassinated by Nathuram Godse in the Birla House on 30th January 1948 during his evening prayer. Gandhiji was a freedom fighter with huge determination, a man who sacrificed his life for the independence, welfare, and development of India. Nathuram Godse was trying to justify his crime by holding Gandhiji responsible for the partition of the country. So, on 30th January, Bapu breathed his last and was martyred. He called Mahatma Gandhi a pretender and in no way felt guilty for his crime. Godse was sentenced to death on 8th November. The Indian Government announced the day as Shaheed Diwas or Martyr’s Day.
