The Government of Tamil Nadu launched a Scheme for Free Distribution of Milch cows during the year 2011-12 in rural areas so as to uplift the livelihood of the poor rural women beneficiaries and also to give boost to the milk productivity of the State. The beneficiaries for this scheme are selected by Grama Sabha as per the Guidelines in the Government Order. Priority will be given to Widows, Destitute,Physically Challenged women and Transgenders.
From 2011-12 so far 87,444 beneficiaries were provided with 87,444 milch cows at an allocation of Rs 380.61 Crore.For the year 2019-20 the scheme will be implemented in 30 districts and 12,000 beneficiaries will be provided with 12,000 milch cows at a cost of Rs 49.832 crore. Each beneficiary will be provided with 1 milch cow.Milch cows are being procured from Andhra Pradesh and Karanataka States and also from shandies of Tamil Nadu.
The Government of Tamil Nadu launched a Scheme for Free Distribution of Goats / Sheep for the poorest of poor in the rural areas in order to enhance their standard of living during the year 2011-12. The Scheme has been well appreciated for its success in converting an assetless individuals into animal asset owning families having a sustainable livelihood opportunity. The beneficiaries for this scheme are selected by Grama Sabha as per the Guidelines in the Government Order. Priority will be given to Widows, Destitute, Physically Challenged women and Transgenders.
Under this Scheme, 40,88,608 Goats/Sheep were given at free of cost to 10,22,152 poor rural landless families at an allocation of Rs 1457.75 Crore since 2011-12 onwards. For the year 2019-20 1,50,000 beneficiaries will be provided with 6,00,000 goats/ sheep at a cost of Rs 198.75 crore. Each beneficiary will be provided with 4 goats/sheep.
In order to empower the women, it was decided that the actual beneficiary for both schemes would be the Woman of the household.
