Haryana PCS Syllabus
The Haryana Civil Services Prelims exam is scheduled to be conducted on 21st May 2023. As the Haryana Civil Services Preliminary Examination is just around the corner, candidates must be looking for the Prelims as well as the Mains syllabus. HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023 for Prelims
The first stage of selection in the Haryana Civil Services is the Preliminary Examination. The HPSC HCS Prelims is a qualifying round and the marks obtained in this round will not be added to the final merit list. The HPSC HCS Prelims exam will consist of two papers- Paper I General Studies and Paper II Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT). The questions will be of objective type. Each paper will be for two hours. The CSAT Paper is a qualifying paper, where candidates need to score a minimum of 33%. HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023 for Prelims Paper I
The Paper I in the Haryana Civil Services Prelims Examination is on General Studies. The topics in HCS Prelims Paper I are-

- Current events of national and international importance.
- History of India and Indian National Movement.
- Indian and World Geography.
- Indian Culture, Indian Polity, and Indian Economy.
- General Mental Ability.
- Haryana-Economy and people. Social, economic, and cultural institutions and language of Haryana

General Science | Questions on General Science will cover general appreciation and understanding of science including matters of everyday observation and experience. |
Current events of national and international importance. | In current events, knowledge of significant national and international events will be tested. |
History of India and the Indian National Movement | In History of India, the emphasis will be on the broad general understanding of the subject in its social, economic, and political aspects. Questions on the Indian National Movement will relate to the nature and character of the nineteenth-century resurgence, growth of nationalism, and attainment of Independence |

HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023 for Prelims Paper II
According to the HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023, Paper II in the Prelims Examination is Civil Services Aptitude Test or CSAT. The topics under this section are-
- Comprehension
- Interpersonal skills including communication skills
- Logical reasoning and analytical ability
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- General mental ability
- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, order of magnitude, etc.-Class X level)
- Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency, etc. – Class X-level).
HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023 for Mains
Candidates who will qualify for the HPSC HCS Preliminary Examination will appear for the Haryana Civil Services Mains Examination. In the HPSC HCS Mains Examination, there will be four papers of conventional/ essay type which shall be of 3 hours duration each. The total marks in the mains examination will be 600. The papers in the Haryana Civil Services Mains Examination are-
- Paper – I: English (including English Essay)
- Paper – II: Hindi (including Hindi Essay) in Devanagari Script
- Paper – III: General Studies
- Paper – IV: One optional subject

Paper – I: English (including English Essay)
The aim of the paper is to test the candidate‘s ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and to express his ideas: clearly and correctly in English. There will be two parts in this section- English and Essay.
English-
- Precis Writing
- Comprehension of given passages
- Essay
- Usage and Vocabulary
- General Grammar/Composition
Essay- Candidates will be required to write an essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given. They will be expected to keep close to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in an orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective, and exact expression.
Paper – II: Hindi (including Hindi Essay) in Devanagari Script
- Translation of an English passage into Hindi.
- Letter/Precis writing.
- Explanation of Hindi passages (prose and poetry) in the same language.
- Composition (idioms, correction, etc.).
- Essay on a specific topic. The choice of subjects will be given.
Paper – III: General Studies
There will be two parts in this section- Part I and Part II. The questions will be such as to test a candidate‘s general awareness of a variety of subjects that will have relevance for a career in Civil Services. Check the detailed syllabus for Part I and Part II below.

- Indian Polity
- Current National issues and topics of social relevance
Topics | Explanation |
History of Modern India and Indian Culture | The History of Modern India will cover the history of the country from about the middle of the nineteenth century and would also include questions on important personalities who shaped the freedom movement and social reforms. The part relating to Indian Culture‘ will cover all aspects of Indian culture from ancient to modern times. |
Geography of India | In this part, questions will on the physical, economic, and social geography of India. |
Indian Polity | This part will include questions on the Constitution of India, the Political system, and related matters. |
Current National issues and topics of social relevance | This part is intended to test the candidate‘s awareness of current national issues and topics of social relevance in present-day India, such as the following: Demography and Human Resources and related issues.
Behavioral and social issues and social welfare problems, such as child labor, gender equality, adult literacy, rehabilitation of the handicapped and other deprived segments of society, drug abuse, public health, etc. Law enforcement issues, human rights, corruption in public life, communal harmony, etc. Internal Security and related issues. Environmental issues, ecological preservation, conservation of natural resources, and national heritage. The role of national institutions, their relevance, and the need for change. |

India and the World | This part is intended to test the candidate‘s awareness of India‘s relationship with the world in various spheres, such as the following:-
Foreign Affairs External Security and related matters. Nuclear Policy. Indian abroad. |
Indian Economy | In this part, questions will be on the planning and economic development in India, economic and trade issues foreign trade, the role and functions of I.M.F. world Bank, W.T.O., etc. |
International Affairs and Institutions | This part will include questions on important events in world affairs and on international institutions. |
Developments in the field of science and technology, communications, and space | In this part, questions will test the candidate‘s awareness of the developments in the field of science and technology, communications and space, and also basic ideas about computers. |
Statistical analysis, graphs, and diagrams | This part will include exercises to test the candidate‘s ability to draw common sense conclusions from information presented in a statistical, graphical, or diagrammatical form and to point out deficiencies, limitations, or inconsistencies therein. |
Paper – IV: One Optional Subject
According to the HPSC HCS Syllabus 2023, Paper IV will be an Optional Subject. For this paper, candidates have to select only one optional subject out of the 29 optional subjects given below, in which they want to appear in the HPSC HCS Mains 2023. The choice of the optional subject is done at the time of filling out the application form and will not be changed under any circumstances.
