Delhi Rashtrapati Bhavan’s Mughal Garden Renamed Amrit Udyan

The iconic gardens at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi, which were known as Mughal Gardens will now be known as “Amrit Udyan”.The Central government on Saturday renamed the Mughal Gardens in New Delhi’s Rashtrapati Bhavan to “Amrit Udyan”. The name has been by President Draupadi Murmu as part of “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” festivities, to mark the 75 years of India’s independence i.e. “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav”.

Navika Gupta, the deputy press secretary to President Droupadi Murmu, said, “On the occasion of the celebrations of 75 years of Independence as ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’, the President of India has given a common name to the Rashtrapati Bhavan gardens as Amrit Udyan.”

Amrit Udyan Inauguration

The Amrit Udyan will be integrated by President Droupadi Murmu on 29th January 2023, Sunday and the public can visit the Amrit Udyan for two months from 31st January to 26th March 2023. Earlier the public used to visit the garden for a period of one month only i.e. February to March when the flowers are in full bloom.

Amrit Udyan Visiting Hours

The president’s secretariat said in a statement,” This time the Gardens (Herbal Garden, Bonsai Garden, Central Lawn, Long Garden, and Circular Garden) will be open for about two months. The Gardens will open for the general public on 31st January 2023 and will remain open till 26th March 2023. The garden will remain closed except on Mondays which are maintenance days and on 8th March on account of Holi.

The garden will be exclusively open for special categories which include farmers, differently-abled persons, defense and paramilitary forces, and Delhi police personnel from 28th January to 31st January 2023.

The visitors are allowed to visit Amrit Udyan in six hourly slots between 10 am and 4 pm. The capacity for the two forenoon slots (10 am to 12 noon) will be 7,500 visitors during weekdays and 10,000 visitors in each slot on weekends. The capacity for the four-afternoon slots (12 noon to 4 pm) will be 5,000 visitors in each slot during weekdays and 7,500 visitors on weekends.

As per the official information available on Rashtrapati Bhavan’s website, the Amrit Udyan draws its inspiration from the Mughal Gardens of Jammu and Kashmir, the gardens around the Taj Mahal, and even miniature paintings of India and Persia. The Amrit Udyan is spread over a vast expanse of 15 acres. The garden was built by Sir Edward Lutyens, who is credited to have made the Lutyen Zone in the national capital.
